In our country, English is only learnt as a foreign language. Students seldom have opportunities to use English they have learnt in classroom in their daily life. In such an environment, it is no doubt that the most efficient way of learning English well depends on extensive reading. Reading teaching is also particularly emphasized in the whole process of English teaching. Besides, there are clear demands for English reading teaching in the English curriculum. As is known to all, the teaching of reading is playing an important role to the success of English teaching. It is related to the improvement of teaching quality and the accomplishment of the teaching goals. The effect of reading teaching, however, is not ideal. To most of the students, their reading ability, reading strategies and reading speed, etc. are all poor. It is necessary to enhance the research on the teaching of reading. After all, reading skill is one of the basic skills in English learning.Nowadays, with the development of English course books, most of the teachers and students find it difficult to adapt to them quickly. The number of low achievers is increasing and the gap between high achievers and low achievers is also becoming obvious, which seriously prevents the improvement of the English teaching quality. It is necessary to emphasize the teaching researches about low achievers. According to the author's experience and the study on educational theories, the author finds what prevent low achievers from learning English efficiently are not their intelligent factors but their affective factors, especially their self-esteem and self-confidence. It is the affective factors such as self-esteem and self-confidence that lead to the low achievers' language anxiety, influence their learning motivations and their casual attributions directly or indirectly. As a result, they have to give up learning English.
