The total goal of primary English education posed in Standards of English Curriculum is to foster students' ability to apply English and to enhance their proficiency in English through study and practice. To achieve this goal, task-oriented instruction is clearly advocated.English is a foreign language in our country. Out of classrooms or other particular study environments, the absolute majority of students have little opportunities to practice English, let alone to communicate with native speakers. Many educators have put big efforts into course design, class management and appraisal system in classroom teaching and tried different tactics to offer more practice-opportunities. However, limited by class time and scholastic appraisal system, the feasibility of interactive language instruction is low. The main source students acquire language information from is reading.Reading is a complicated course of information processing, which conveys information from author to reader. The core business of Senior High School English Education is to foster students' ability to read and comprehend. It is also the key to quality education in Foreign Language subject. Reading, only reading alone, can break the limitations in time, place and occasion. It provides a totally free and open learning style. There is no reading; there is no language learning. One who wants to grasp a language must read widely and deeply. Leaning a language can in no way be separated from reading.In preceding Senior English for China, reading text is the core of each unit.
