Reading is not only a tool of learning but also a way of learning. It has deep-based theories and practice. Form New Curriculum Criteria of Junior High Schools, one of the most important goals is to develop the students'reading comprehension ability. This paper analyzes the basic concepts of reading, reading process models, reading comprehension abilities and teaching approaches to reading tasks,etc.. Guided by the four important theories such as Cognitive Psychology, Reading Theory, Schema Theory and Second Language Acquisition Theory, the writer designs the goals and principles of improving the students'comprehension ability. Through a year's research among the students from Nanjing Binjiang Middle School and No. 66 Middle School, I found out the weakness of our reading teaching models. On the basis of research, I conclude that we should improve the students'comprehension ability through the task-oriented reading teaching models and set up the five basic principles on designing the tasks. They are the Principle of Integration, the Principle of Aim, the Principle of Gradation, the Principle of Adaptation and the Principle of Variation. Under the guidance of these theories and principles, I construct the new teaching approaches to the reading tasks which include four models. Each model has different tasks which are designed to train students'abilities to solve the tasks. The models are effective in training the students'reading comprehension ability. After they finish these tasks, they achieve their reading aims, too. And their reading fluency has been much improved.
