TBLT has been developing for over twenty years. In China, theories and methods of TBLT were brought in foreign language teaching in the end of last century, which have promoted many a research on TBLT, such as researches on task-based theories, task design, teaching evaluation and testing, teaching models. In view of current problems in senior high school English reading instruction such as low interests in reading, inappropriate guidance in reading instruction, we propose that a pre-task planning should be added in the pre-task phase. By empirical research, we try to answer the following two questions:(1) Whether the pre-task planning can improve students’ ability of reading comprehension by task-based reading instruction?(2) Whether the pre-task planning can be more effective to improve students’ ability of reading comprehension with the pre-task guidance by task-based reading instruction?Based on Krashen’s Input Hypothesis, Skehan’s Dual-mode System and Bruner’s Discovery Learning, we have implemented the experiment in No.6Middle School of Changsha Country. The experiment included two parts:classroom test and questionnaire. The former was designed to prove the effectiveness of the pre-task planning and the latter was designed to discuss the reading psychology. The experimental results show that the pre-task planning can improve students’ability of reading comprehension by task-based reading instruction. Such ability refers to the comprehension of content and structure and the comprehension of linguistic units in the passage. Besides, the pre-task planning can be more effective to improve students’ ability of reading comprehension with the pre-task guidance by task-based reading instruction. In addition, according to the results of questionnaire, we find that pre-task planning with the pre-task guidance can reduce the pressure and workload during reading and the difficulty of tasks. It can also provide students with a good learning atmosphere and improve students’comprehensive reading ability. This research proves the effectiveness of pre-task planning to some extent. However, there still exist a few limitations in present research. The number of the participants involved in this study is relatively small. The experimental session was so short and the measures of reading comprehension were not so all-sided. We hope this research can serve as a modest spur to induce someone to come forward with his valuable contributions.
