Public School is the most distinctive in English secondary educational system. Based upon the theory of some cultural anthropologists, this paper makes an attempt to scrutinize English public schools'cultural characteristics. The introduction puts forth the principal argument and interprets several relevant concepts. Then Chapter 1 tackles with the historical background of public schools in England. Chapter 2 focuses on discussing public schools'cultural characteristics. Applying the theoretical framework laid in the introduction, Chapter 3 tries to explore reasons of public schools'cultural characteristics through studying the interactions between public schools and English culture. The author's interest in the subject is far from examining English public schools in pursuit of knowledge for their own sake; instead, she is primarily interested in what China can learn from the experience of England in her building up public schools. So Chapter 4 takes a further step by revealing the practical significance of English public schools'cultural characteristics to China. In the conclusion, the subject of this paper is restated, and some of the points expressed in the previous chapters are emphasized.Although, my intellect and reference at hand may not necessarily embrace what my consciousness and passion have described, this paper still hopes to promote a better understanding of English public schools and English culture, to help solve some educational problems in China by assimilating English public schools'success, and to contribute to a more efficient communication between the English people and the Chinese people in this global village.
