Research On The Regional Characteristics Of University Leaders

The success of a university is inseparable from an outstanding group of leaderswith wisdom, experience, charm and pioneering spirit. Leaders' personalcharacteristics affect their own behaviors, and the feature of the team has influence ontheir university. Problems of a university can be solved effectively by optimizing theuniversity leadership team structure. Chinese modern university system is not perfectyet and the leadership selection mechanism in universities needs to be improved.This paper analyzes the regional characteristics of university leaders, and putsforward proposals for the selection of university leaders in the end. The comparison ofpersonal and group characteristics is based on information about university leaders'education, career paths, and demographic characteristics such as age, gender and so on.Because of the developed information technology, leaders' biographies are searchedfrom university websites and web search engine such as Google and Baidu. This studyanalyzes the regional characteristics of university leaders of the following fourprovinces: Chongqing, Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Shanghai. The personal characteristicsare compared by position type between secretaries of the Party committee anduniversity presidents. The group characteristics are compared by institutional typeamong doctorate-granting universities, master's universities and baccalaureateuniversities.It comes to a conclusion that the regional characteristics of university leaders arenot significant among different provinces in China. Suggestions on the construction ofuniversity leadership team are as follows: First, the age structures should be optimized.Second, the gender and nationality structure should be optimized. Third, the academicstructures should be optimized. Fourth, the selection mode should be optimized. Fifth,the regional characteristics should be highlighted.
