Metacognition refers to higher order thinking which involves active control over cognitive processes, which plays an important role in successful English acquisition.This paper mainly summarizes the function of metacognition in English reading after class, stating that effective process of metacognition conduces to the improvement of the students'reading capability. English reading as a complicated cognitive activity, its cognitive capabilities consists of two sides involving students. One is knowledge about reading, which mainly is reading knowledge about reading means and method. For example, how to scan; how to find out and put forward problems and so forth. The other is knowledge about cognitive activities. That is , they are able to consciously make thorogh plans for reading activities to supervise the reading process at any moment. So they can adjust accordingly. Such as Is it right to read like this? Can I achieve my reading purpose? Based on the study of the relevant literature home and abroad and associated with the questionnaire research done by the author, the paper discusses the connotation of metacognition, its role in English reading, and the relationship between comprehensive level of English reading and metacognitive ability.Metacognition strategy and cognation strategy are the two major factors forming learning strategy."strategy"refers to the solution . It takes an important part in human cognition activity . Strategies in learning refers to the optimal adjust and control. Metacognition strategy is the cognition about the cognition process and the conduct adjusting through the actions such as planning , supervising and evaluating etc. Thus it may assist various learner's strategy.Recently, the theory of metacognition in psychologist is drawing more and more recognition in the field of education of China, for people have taken notice of the role it plays and the value it has in application. The paper tries to find a cut-in between the theory of metacognition and English reading to apply the metacognition strategy in the English teaching of reading . Try to assist the students to improve on their learning method to advance their learning capability and effect.
