Theme-Rheme Analysis-An Approach To Reading Teaching In Senior High School

Due to the importance of reading among the four basic foreign language skills, how to improve students' English reading proficiency has long been a common concern of researcher and English teachers in China. The purpose of this thesis is to apply the approach of Theme-Rheme Structure Analysis to English reading teaching in China.Reading is the major source of input for the learners to acquire English knowledge and develop English competence. However, the traditional way of reading based on grammar-translation makes the whole teaching process dull and boring, with the teacher dominating the class from beginning to the end while the learners are forced to be passive knowledge-receivers. Therefore, this thesis is a tentative study of English teachers in China how to use the approach of Theme-Rheme Structure Analysis to reading teaching.Also, this thesis has adopted the experimental approach. The experiment includes pre-test and post-test. Comparing the effect of using the "Bottom—up" strategy with that of using the "Theme and Rheme" structure analytical approach in the reading course in pre-test and post-test in Senior High school, the researcher found that students have greatly improved their reading speed and achieved more effective reading comprehension after the experiment. The students' English reading proficiency has been improved greatly in Senior High School.This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one gives a general introduction about reading and the current reading teaching in Senior High School in China.Chapter two illustrates several reading models and strategies abroad and in China.
