The Present Situation And Prospect Of Chinese Education In Surabaya

Surabaya, the largest commercial port city, has been the business center for Chinese in Indonesia due to convenient transportation at the end of 16th century. In 20th century, the education for Chinese in Surabaya developed gradually, and reached a period of great prosperity in the mid 1950s. In 1960s, the education for Chinese there disappeared from the scene due to the high-handed policy of the government. Since the reform and open policy put into effect in China, the practical value of Chinese increases with the increase of Chinese national power and international standing. Since 1990s, considering the economic development, Indonesian government make policies more flexibly, with which the Chinese education in Surabaya developed rapidly. At present, Chinese language school flourish there, Ethnic Chinese in Surabaya are enthusiastic of learning Chinese ,and furthermore, local residents also participate into learning Chinese. Within a few years, there is a vigorous mass campaign for learning Chinese in Surabaya.There are 4 chapters in this passage.Chapter 1,"The general historical situation of education for Chinese in Surabaya", is mainly about the history of education for Chinese in Surabaya under the background of the history of education for Chinese in the whole Indonesia.Chapter 2,"The historical backgrounds of rapid development of Chinese education in Surabaya on the stage", mainly analyze the reasons for rapid development of Chinese education in Surabaya from the aspects as the change of situation both at home and abroad in Indonesia; the new Chinese educational policy of Indonesian government; the support of Chinese government to the overseas Chinese education; and the promotion of ethnic Chinese in Surabaya.Chapter 3,"The present situation of Chinese education in Surabaya", mainly analyze the present situation of Chinese education in Surabaya from the aspects as 6 running methods of Chinese education; the general situation of local Chinese teachers; the characteristic of students learning Chinese and the appliance situation of Chinese textbooks.Chapter 4,"The prospect of Chinese education", mainly analyze the advantages and disadvantages of Chinese education and the prospect of it. As a foreign language in Indonesia, the prospect of Chinese education is bright, but it needs to be carefully managed due to special national condition in Indonesia.
