This paper mainly investigated the effectiveness of the lexical chunks in improving English reading for Chinese Senior Three students. It is an empirical study. The subjects in the EG were first trained to learn to use lexical chunks in various ways in senior English reading systematically. Then they were trained to analyze functions of lexical chunks in some written paragraphs. These lexical chunks function as micro-organizers and macro-organizers. Finally, the students in the EG were required to read various styles of texts in the application of the Lexical Chunks Approach.The findings show that after trained, the students in the EG achieved highly significant gains on the total score. This confirms the hypothesis that the application of lexical chunks in senior English reading may improve Senior Three students' ability of English reading. In addition, the application of lexical chunks in RC achievements affected most subjects and the high level and the intermediate level achievers were able to effectively use the approach of lexical chunks in their reading.The present thesis consists of six chapters. Chapterl is an introduction to the research including the orientation, aim, significance, and key questions of the research. Chapter 2 explains the concept and some major classifications of lexical chunks, analyses the processes of RC and the necessity of the use of lexical chunks, and reviews major studies on lexical chunks in RC in and outside China. Chapter 3 introduces the rationale of the present thesis; and puts forward the research question as well as the research hypotheses. Chapter 4 is a presentation of the subjects, the instruments and the procedures of the study. Chapter 5 gave an empirical answer to the questions of the research. Chapter 6 involves the discussion and conclusion of the study, and then gives the implications for teaching and points out the limitations so that further studies will be performed.
