English writing, as a very important means of international communication, is playing more and more crucial role in modern society. Nunan says that producing a coherent, fluent, extended piece of writing is probably the most difficult thing there is to do in language. It is something most native speakers never master. For second language learners the challenges are enormous, particularly for those who go on to a university and study in a language that is not their own.In China, writing is always a difficult job for students in spite of the hard work of many scholars and teachers. Students regard writing as a tough job that they can't finish, some of them even give it up.The theoretical basis of this paper is" Vygotsky's theories and communicative language teaching". A lot of materials about writing teaching for years at home and abroad have been collected, summarized and analyzed. The Task-based Language Teaching approach is advocated, combined with the present situation of middle school English writing. The focus should be put on the meaning of the language instead of the form of the grammar structure in the process of pair work and group work. Writing will be learned in a happy way and writing interest arises so as to promote the students' English writing level. This paper is made up of five sections. The first section deals with the purpose and significance of the present study. Section Two deals with the literature review both at home and abroad. It gives a summary of major trends in the teaching of writing. Section Three is rationale. It gives a general statement of the theoretical basis from psycholinguistic and pedagogical perspective. Section Four is about the design of the experiment, which is the heart of the whole study. It includes the hypothesis, the subjects, the procedure, data collection and analysis. To test the hypothesis of this study, the author conducted an experimental research in two classes of No.3 Middle School of Lanhua with 120 students aged on average 16 in a period of about twelve weeks. The statistic program SPSS was used. Section Five is discussion and conclusion, in which some implications and limitations are put forward.
