The coming age of information and technique has already put forward a new requirement for English teachers in senior middle school. Therefore, the research of English teaching methodology with multi-media becomes a new task facing English teachers. How to use multi-media as an assistant for English teaching is the core of the task. Based on this point, this essay first of all puts forward a discussion on the relation between multi-media and English teaching: On the one hand, multi-media presents a promising future for English teaching in senior middle school. The new technique plays a special role in changing the traditional teaching and learning methods, in relaxing the atmosphere in the classroom, in creating an appropriate learning situation, as well as in triggering out interests in studying. Not only does it enhance teaching contents, but also it enlarges the information in class, which is beneficial for students to increase their knowledge. Meanwhile, senior middle school English teaching provides multi-media with a wide platform. As a newly merged technique, multi-media can be fully developed if it can grasp the opportunity of the English teaching integration. Also, it can help students to dig out their ability of discovery and independent studying as well as the spirit of critical thinking and creativity. Still, there are many problems existing in English teaching with multi-media. For example, some teachers tend to depend totally on multi-media while ignoring the function of teachers themselves. In order to solve these problems adequately, we have to put multi-media in the right place through teaching process. Modern techniques do have advantages, yet traditional methods are also valuable. We can never give up those precious experience which has been passed down. Multi-media is not equal to single-medium. A class can be regarded as a successful one only if multi-media is well used together with other traditional methods.Second, the essay talks about the realization of the assisting function of multi-media in English teaching—the tool of creating certain situations, performing, communication, emphasizing both important and difficult points, upgrading the process of teaching, enhancing teaching resources, increasing the studying productivity, providing the condition for self-study, etc.Third, the essay focuses on the functions of multi-media in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In the listening teaching process, multi-media has the advantage of presenting images, sound, charts, words, etc. directly, which should be fully used. In this way, students can form a sound psychological basis. At the same time, with the direction of teachers, a cooperating teaching process under certain situations can be formed, which is students-cored, tasks-relied, and activities-linked, with language knowledge as the goal. In the speaking teaching process, certain situations created by multi-media can lead students to a new, fresh, and pleasant atmosphere. In this condition, students will become interested in learning without tiredness. Therefore, the task of speaking process can be realized in a relaxing situation. In the reading teaching process, multi-media can provide students with a realistic language learning environment. On the internet, students can search and choose information—then get a solution—based on their own understandings. They can also communicate at any time with classmates and teachers to solve problems, share experience, and illustrate achievements. In the writing teaching process, the methods of topic-presenting, group-discussion, and class-activities are taken. How teachers can identify their roles while making full use of multi-media is also a point being discussed in the essay.
