The Study Of The Hakka Lineage In West Fujian Province

This thesis focuses on the Qiu Family in Shanghang county, located in the west of Fujian province, and at the same time strives to illustrate the different living standards during the different times or historical epochs through the methodology of historical anthropology. Up until recently, the traditional study and research in lineages were limited to the usual arenas of politics and culture, especially as seen in the familial property,the pedigree or genealogical table, and the ancestral temple of the lineages.In this thesis, the writer tries to cast off this traditional framework and to analyze the structure of the central familial lineage and its cultural function.In the preface, the thesis introduces both the writer's philosophic outlook and his methodology.In Chapter 1, the author introduces some related theories, a study frame and a reconsideration of lineage study by traditional academic approaches. It also explains some related definitions of lineages and its research frame.Chapter 2 surveys the general situation of the familial domain—Shanghang county, where the Qiu Family has been living.Chapter 3 focuses on the history of the Qiu Family and its development over time. It also introduces the basic circumstance of the Qiu Family, investigating the ancestral temple of the Qiu and analyzing the deep lineage structure of the Qiu Family.Chapter 4 reviews the organization and progress of the Qiu Family during"the Red Period"(1929-1935), in order to analyze the development of the Qiu Family in that unique background.Chapter 5 discusses the new type of the lineage against the modern background. It analyzes the new organizational characters of the family's development in the past century. In Chapter 6, the writer compares the writing modes of traditional and modern pedigrees and genealogical tables, which shows the new characteristics of the modern pedigree and also analyzes the various and fluctuating causes for them.In conclusion, the writer summarizes all his Korean viewpoints and asserts his thoughts on the structure of the lineages.
