English gentlemen education is a kind of education theory , which origins from Europe and represents the benefits of the arisen class of English bourgeoisie. In view of its characteristics and development, gentlemen education is the results of the developments of English culture, social traditions, economy and education. It played an important role in the growing up of English capitalism and marks a transition from feudalistic education to capital mundane education. Definitely, gentlemen education is a milestone in modern western education system. Locke John, an English educationist and philosopher , laid a solid foundation for gentlemen education theory. Today, maintaining their position of excellence and independence, gentlemen education and English public schools exist alongside with an important and powerful state system of education. They have an old and proud tradition of distinction behind them, which is closely interwoven with that of England itself.Adopting the methods of documentation, comprehensive analysis, case study and comparison, this dissertation makes a thorough study of the English gentleman education, analysis the differences between gentlemen education and Chinese traditional education of men of honors, and points out its inspiration to our education for all-around development.Chapter 1 tracks down the evolutionary development of gentleman education. In chapter 2, we discuss Locke's Some Thoughts Concerning Education and gentlemen education from the aspects of moral education, healthy education, intellectual education and students' management. As an example, in chapter 3, we study the objects and based theory of Eton Public School, and also its curriculum,teaching and students managements etc. Chapter 4 analyses the cultural factors contributing to the gentlemen education phenomenon. Chapter 5 investigates the relationships between English gentlemen education and Chinese traditional education of men of honors. It found that gentlemen education emphasizes on people's personality while Chinese traditional education pays more attention on collectivism.In the last chapter, we found the possible utilization of gentlemen education in our education for all-around development. We think that we should strengthen our efforts to students' personality design in our education systems.
