Throughout the development of world history,China is well-known as a nation of ceremonies with splendid continuous culture for about five thousand years,which makes her outstanding in the world.It is also well acknowledged that the ancient China had led the development of world countries for a long period of time.Junzi is the personality of Chinese people,a real portrayal of Chinese spirit,an essence of Chinese culture and a miracle which will never fade in human history.Junzi Education theory as well as its practice makes Junzi personality a rare treasure to be enduring and worth spreading to the world.With its miraculous glories of the Empire,the UK has led the development of modern civilization of the world.Both Gentleman Education in Britain and Junzi Education in China are pearls and treasures in the world education heritage.Identifying personality education as their core and cultivating the elite that the Times call for as their purpose,both education theories have made a significant contribution to the maintenance of the country's stability and sustainable development,as well as the international image shaping of their own country.Junzi Education and Gentleman Education can be regarded as classics of world education.They are an indispensable and important subjects in education research.This selected topic A Comparative Study of Junzi Education and Gentleman Education aims to provide a systematic comparison between Chinese Junzi Education and British Gentleman Education,and analyze their differences,advantages,disadvantages and their contemporary values,It will make up the shortages of the contemporary Gentleman Education and relevant theory research on one hand;on the other hand,it may promote the contemporary Chinese Junzi Education and Gentleman Education to cater for the demand of their healthy practice in contemporary China.Apart from the introduction and conclusion,the main content of the dissertation is divided into six parts: the comparison of conceptual interpretation between Junzi Education and Gentleman Education;the comparison of their background formation;the comparison of their education objectives;the comparison of their education content;the comparison of their education methods;the comparison of their implementation paths;the comparison of their values and historical influences.Junzi Education is an education mode which is created by Confucius on the basis of Confucianism,for the purpose of cultivating Junzi who can be "the saint inside and the king outside " in private teaching practice.It has become the leading mode of Chinese education from Han dynasty until Qing dynasty.Gentleman Education refers to an education mode which sprouts from the Renaissance,which centered on the Locke's Gentleman Education thoughts in the 17 th century and aimed at cultivating career and home gentlemen.Afterwards it became the leading mode of British education from the 17 th to 19 th century.The main formative backgrounds of Junzi Education include the culture and education of “Three Generations” as its historical background,the folk customs and cultures in Zou and Lu region as its cultural background,the social turmial as its social background and the upheaval of Junzi Education to a civil service system of unified empire during the Spring and Autumn period as its political background.By contrast,the backgrounds of the formation of British Gentleman Education include the classical liberal education concept of ancient Greek and Rome,the characteristics of the British aristocracy tradition and devout Christian faith as the important historical backgrounds and Renaissance humanism education thought and the establishment of the capitalist system as the religious and cultural background.According to the analysis,it is argued that Junzi Education and Gentleman Education have the same mechanism,and they both are rooted in the profound cultural background and emerged during the era of big social change.The differences mainly include the following aspects: Junzi Education has its own system while Gentleman Education is influenced by other countries;Junzi Education is nonreligious while Gentleman Education has religious background;Junzi Education makes no social distinction in teaching while Gentleman Education lays emphasis on social status and family ancestry,etc.As for education objective,the education purpose of Junzi Education and Gentleman Education is analyzed mainly from the classical discourse analysis in education purpose of educators and the requirement of being a Junzi or a gentleman.Junzi Education is aiming at cultivating the common talent that Confucians advocates,the personality that is heavily shaped by Confucians.Junzi regards "Taoism" as the highest ideal,"Humanity" as the inner spirit,"Justice" as the basic principles,"Propriety" as the formation of social service ability and "Wisdom" as the basic integrity,which forms the connotation of ideal personality and talent standard.Christian gentleman,executives,new gentleman,career and home gentleman and academic gentleman are specific training objectives of Gentleman Education in different periods.Developing career and home gentleman and gentility is the main purpose of the gentleman education.The requirement of the gentleman virtue is the first,learning is the second.Robust constitution is the basis of the career and home body's needs and personal happiness,beautiful expression and full wisdom are the crystallization of knowledge and practice.Thus,what Junzi Education and Gentleman Education have in common are their pursuit of shaping perfect personality,attaching importance to the cultivation of the social elite and pointing education to the man,etc.Their differences are the official priority in learning or birth,the attention in inner transcending or the overt behavior type,cultivating academic talents or career and home talents,etc.For the education content,the Junzi Education in this paper mainly analyzes the "Six Arts" and "Six Books",Xiaojing?Wujing?Sishu and other classical education liberal arts.Gentleman Education is mainly elaborated from the physical education,moral education,intellectual education,etc.The analysis above demonstrates the similarities and differences of the two education modes.What Junzi Education and Gentleman Education have in common are mainly in attaching great importance to the moral education curriculum setting,curriculum content highlights the humanity,classical and other characteristics;differences are primarily the different setups in language course,as well as single,closed,comprehensive and open curriculum systems,etc.As for education methods,this paper covers some of them,namely,teaching according to students' aptitude,encouraging studying step by step,inspiring elicitation,guiding self-study,stressing concentration in study and perseverance in ambition,emphasizing self-supervision introspection,exercising self-discipline,leading others by setting himself as an example,keeping studying in pace with thinking,applying knowledge to practice,keeping discipline as soon as possible and cultivating rights,using sharp contrast and quantative statements to cultivate and warn people,etc.This dissertation interprets teaching methods of gentleman education as combining health and exercise,keeping discipline as soon as possible,opposing spoiling children,cultivating good habits proper use of appropriate rewards and punishment,paying attention to reason,focusing on children's personality and psychological characteristics,setting good examples,etc.What Junzi Education and Gentleman Education have in common shows in stressing teaching according to students' aptitude and emphasizing the combination of knowledge and practice,and attaching great importance to the role of the teacher and paying attention to early education,retaining corporal punishment,etc.Main differences display in that Junzi Education focuses on the intrinsic tutelage while Gentleman Education focuses on the habit;synthesis and differentiation in education method,as well as the education methods to education stage and the different organization.For the implement access,this paper discusses some methods of Junzi Education,namely,Confucian private schools,Imperial College academies and Confucian family education,etc.The implement of Gentleman Education shows mainly in the analysis of the family education,public education,higher education in Oxford and Cambridge,continental study aboard,etc.Based on the analysis,the main discoveries are worded out.Both Junzi Education and Gentleman Education have formed their complete education system and social upper middle class being the dominant force in promoting implementation etc.Differences mainly lie in children's education stage.Junzi Education focuses on family education while Gentleman Education focuses on school education,Junzi Education is an open education system while Gentleman Education is a closed system.Other differences are the cost and the length of schooling in high education,etc.Junzi Education and Gentleman Education not only have an important influence on the development of our national education,but also have affected to some extent the rest of the world education development.Meanwhile,Junzi Education and Gentleman Education have made important contributions to the country's stability and development through the talent training,and they promote the formation and development of Junzi culture and gentleman culture in the long-term practice in their own countries.However,the training goal of Junzi Education and Gentleman Education gives priority to civil officials,teaching content dominated by humanity and the classical courses determines that they are to cultivate the headworker niche,which is a small-scale education.In addition,Gentleman Education has limitations like social distinction of teaching subjects while Junzi Education has historical limitations like relative simple education content.Junzi Education and Gentleman Education are of great significance in the innovation of contemporary education theory,the sound development of elite education,the implement in building morality and cultivating people,the initiation of moral education of Chinese citizens and the practice and cultivation of core values of socialism.Besides,the inheritance and development of Gentleman Education have a beneficial impact on that of Junzi education.The moral pursuit of Junzi Education and Gentleman Education is the eternal theme of human education.
