The Construction Of Rural Women's Subjectivity Under The Double Discourses

The problem of women's social status has for drawn people's attention for hundreds of years and many scholars have done continuous researches on it. Though their opinions differ from each other's in many aspects, they share the same opinion that women's subjectivity is the key to the change of women's status. It is only when women's subjectivity can be built and developed that the social status they are striving for is really favorable for their own development. Otherwise their disadvantage will be continuing.In the process of the change of Chinese women's social status, the state has made unremitting efforts to improve women's social status and Chinese women do begin to enjoy equal personality and dignity in political, economical, cultural and family affairs, however, Chinese women's subjectivity is in a state of absence. Correspondingly, the social status women got is rather a construction and the improvement of their social status is not satisfying. Under the new historic conditions, according to the present conditions of rural women, many scholars have found that while their subjectivity is present, it is still oppressed on a large scale. They are in a secondary status in many fields.During the research the writer found that the state's discourses on rural women are still full of patriarchal color while the rural women still consent to them. Consequently their subjectivities are still oppressed. Certainly the rural women's discourses show the presence of their subjectivities. However on the whole, women's subjectivity is still absent under the double discourses of the state and themselves. This condition must be changed in order to improve women's social status, which needs to take into consideration of their own discourse and to realize the reconstruction of subjectivity on the basis of their own discourse. Only in this way can women get the social status, which is really beneficial to their own development.It deserves our attention that under new historic conditions gender mainstreaming provides certain conditions for realizing the reconstruction of subjectivity on the basis of women discourse and improving their social status. Therefore we should understand and promote gender mainstreaming better, build and develop rural women's new subjectivity and improve their social status on the basis of realizing fully the nature of gender mainstreaming reform and the pattern of reform based on rights and guided by development. To achieve this goal, all the social forces, especially the women's spokesperson, must make their efforts and it will be a long course.We believe, however, that with the gradual realization of gender mainstreaming, the reconstruction of women's subjectivity based on women's discourse will be realized at last and their social status will be improved as well, which will drive forward the harmonious development and the smooth progression of new countryside-construction.
