The class-based teaching system has been functioned for several centuries; it treats different students by the identical standards. It has ignored students'individualities and its shortcoming has continually caused people's criticisms. While people were pursuing to show the individualities, Differentiated Instruction theory appeared and aroused interest all over the world. Since Differentiated Instruction enormously enhances teaching efficiency and satisfies all students'requirement. The domestic and foreign education researchers all positively dedicated themselves to study the deep meaning of Differentiated Instruction and perfect its basic theory. Under the teacher profession development idea, this article pays attention to exploring what teaching competence teachers do have to make it more effective as executors of the Differentiated Instruction.Firstly, this article introduced the basic idea of Differentiated Instruction, its emergence, its definition and theoretical bases, its types and influences to teaching, classroom teaching of Differentiated Instruction and differences between it and other related concepts. After these, the author constructed four kinds of competences based on the Differentiated Instruction: the competence for assessing student difference, for designing Differentiated Instruction, for managing differentiated classroom, for integrating information technology with Differentiated Instruction. The competence for assessing student difference is the foundation for teachers to execute the Differentiated Instruction. The pre-assessment and post-assessment complements each other and promotes the teacher to understand the student and the student positively to develop themselves. The competence for designing Differentiated Instruction is the core of teaching competence. It exhaustively described some teaching design methods based on students'preparation level, their interests and study styles. The significance of the competence for managing differentiated classroom is the flexible grouping ability by which the teacher may satisfy students'requirements better. The information competence is essential on background of the 21st century information society. The essence of competence for integrating the information technology with the Differentiated Instruction is that the teacher not only uses the information technology to assist his teaching, but also pays attention to raising students'information technology ability. The author took WebQuest, an information technology tool, as an example.
