With the development of information society, education is expected to cultivate students' ability of assimilating and processing information as well as spread information. As a chief means of input in English language learning, English reading in senior high schools occupies an important place in the aspects of skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Therefore, reading is regarded as the most basic way in gaining information, being engaged in learning and going in for entertainment. English reading teaching is an important part among English teaching. But unfortunately the scores of English reading comprehension is the lowest among the NMET English test .The phenomenon of "more input and less output" is still popular in English reading teaching. There are two reasons for this. One is related to the reading concept which is unilateral and unrealistic, the other is because learners can not grasp and use reading strategy properly.Based on a questionnaire investigation and theory study, this paper has made a brief study on senior high students' English reading .It focuses largely on reading strategy, illustrating the necessity and importance of reading strategy so that the concrete approaches can be determined.So, this thesis intends to make an attempted study of the English reading strategy and strategy training in senior high schools so as to see whether the students' application of reading strategy is more effective in enhancing their reading comprehension when they get trained in reading strategy.In the present study, about 81 Senior Two students were chosen as the subjects from class 5& 7 in No. 30 School in Wuhan.Class5 is the experiment group; Class 7 is the control group. Based on the results of the questionnaire investigation on the students' reading strategy, reading strategy training was performed in experiment class for 12 weeks, while in the control class, the conventional reading teaching method (grammar-translation method) was conducted. The data collected were students' questionnaire investigation on reading strategy, pre-test and post-test in reading. And all the data were calculated by SPSS (Statistical Program for Social Science) 13.0.The statistic results indicate that the students can obtain enough effective reading strategies after reading strategy training, and that effective reading strategies can help students improve their reading comprehension. The statistic results reveal that the students' reading performance and their self-study ability in English reading after the strategy training have been improved markedly than these of the students in control group.The results of this study may provide first-hand information on English reading for senior English teachers. In this way they can help the students to find their shortcomings and adjust their reading strategy. At the same time college English teachers will be likely to benefit from the results of this study. It provides them with the freshman's English reading situations on reading strategy.Therefore major findings in this study are listed below:Firstly, we should do more work to improve the traditional English reading theory and approaches. English reading strategy research is a task in English teaching reform.Secondly, it is a major task to improve students' reading ability in senior English teaching. It is certain that students will learn some language points and obtain some information in reading class. If students can master and use reading strategy while reading, they will get double achievement.Thirdly, statistic results of the research show the strategy-based instruction and training plan is practical and valuable. These results also support the ideas that reading strategy aid students to improve reading ability.Fourthly, the students' application of reading strategy is more effective in enhancing their reading comprehension when they get trained in reading strategy. It illustrates the necessity and importance of training reading strategy.Fifthly, using reading strategy in English reading teaching is of great benefit to enhance students' study ability. It comes to light that students should learn and use them in order to improve their reading ability.
