The New Standards of High School Curriculum stresses that high school students are required to have the abilities to catch the main information of the passage, to guess the meanings of new words, to predict the trend and to use reading strategies appropriately while reading. However, situations of high school students' English reading ability, nowadays, are not optimistic. One of the problems is students are not familiar with the usage of reading strategies. A questionnaire by using Likert Scale is conducted on the reading strategies application. Results show the mean of:predicting 3.33; vocabulary 2.92; skimming 4.66; scanning 3.33; structure 2.33; inference 2.92. Generally, the reading strategies application is rather low which raises the attention of the teachers. Unfamiliar and unable to use the reading strategies, which directly leads heavy loses on reading comprehension, have great influence on the improvement of final scores. Training students reading strategies is essential for English teaching in high school.Quiz is a mini test with high efficiency as well as clear testing goals, which has been used by the majority of high school teachers in class for teaching. It is not limited by the space and time, but teachers barely use quiz for students' reading strategies training, to enhance students' English reading competence. This paper studies how to improve the students' reading ability through quiz based on training reading strategies. The experiment assumes that the quiz which aims to train students to use the reading strategies will do active effect on the improvement of students'reading abilities. In the experiment, students are divided into 2 groups:controlled group and experimental group. Before the experiments, there is a pre-test to measure whether there is difference between the control group and experimental group. After the experiment, there is also a test for the control group and experimental group, which is designed to test the difference between the levels of the reading competence in the groups. Meanwhile, we also use the SPSS to analyze the results of the final-test. The results of the experiments show that the quiz aiming on training the reading strategy has a positive effect on reading ability. It is hoped that the research could offer the persuasive theoretical evidence for the high school reading teaching, especially for the quiz aiming to train the usage of reading strategies of the students. Meanwhile, it could also enhance the consciousness of using the quiz flexibly during the class for the teachers and offer the reference of the future study.
