Geography is one of the basic curriculums during junior middle school. It is the consist of quality education .After years of exam-oriented education, there are low efficiency in our geography teaching, our students had little interesting in studying it and they got bad result in the exams. Many students lack good methods in learning it. And they feel it is especially difficult in memory the key of studying geography -the maps. The geography teaching needs a scientific and available method of maps teaching based on Education and Psychology.Mental image is the image of things or objects experienced before in brain.Congnitive psychology found that mental image is the important style for saving imformation during long-term memory.Image training is the operation to the image in brain.The apply in physical teaching can help students maste skills, reduce pressure and improve studying interesting.Aesthetical image training based on general mental image, it considers the aesthetical facts of maps in geography.It put into the learners' emotions. It also combines with the regular teaching.Aethetical teaching is the goal chased by every teacher. This study anticipate the students can have vivid maps images in their brain after they study after aesthetical image training.It also hope they can get good record in the maps exams in class or some days later. So it can improve their interesting in maps studying and find more aesthetical factors of maps and Geography.In order to know what are the students' concepts of geography and the difficulties in memory maps .Make sure if they had changed much on the attitude on studying geography,the methods and the difficulties of maps memory after the New Curriculums Reform. Seven middle schools were selected in Xinhua, Hunan. Investigated each class random got from each grade from every school. It totally got 909 useful questionnaires. The results show: (1) The students lack of methods on studying geography, they have little active after school, their achievement and interesting in studying decrease with the grow of grades. (2) The students have difficulties in memory maps, there are a gender differential and grade differential in maps memory, the boys are better than girls and the Grade 2 got better achievement than Grade 1. (3) The beauty of geography and maps teaching haven't been dig out yet, there is a significant difference between two grades on the answer of the feeling of beauty, Grade 2 is better than Grade 1.Then select two classes from Grade 1 and Grade 2 in Mengong Middle School in Xinhua. One class taught the maps as usual, the other class used Image Training method to teach the same maps in the same grade. After every section of study, they will have a exam in class. The experiment lasted for a month. It totally got 233 students' data. The results show: (1) Teaching maps using image training method had significant greater promotion on students' short term map memory. (2) It also progress their long term memory results, but the effect is not significant in Grade 2. It is also reported by the students that the method improved the clear of maps' image. (3)Students from Image training class also show more interesting in class than students in control class.In order to demonstrate the effect of Aesthetical Image Training on maps teaching. Six classes total 200 students from two grades were got from Jiangbei No 14 Middle School in Chongqing. Each grade had one for the control class, one for the Image Training Class, and One for the Aesthetical Image Training Class. Each grade had two sections of teaching contents. Each section had an exam. A week after the experiment they had an exam for all the maps they have checked before. The results show: (1)On the test after class, the students from Aesthetical Image Training class had significant higher scores than students from the other two classes, the students from Image Training had significant higher scores than students from control class. (2)On the exam a week later, the result is the same as on the exams after class in Grade 1, but the differences in Grade 2 only found between Aesthetic Image Training class and control class. (3)It found great significant differences in the students' report of maps' images' clear and beautiful between Aesthetical Image Training and the control class. There is no difference between Image Training class and control class on the images' clear and beautiful. (4)Aesthetical Image Training class' students think maps teaching like that make the image of maps in their mind vividly and interesting. The students from control class think the teacher's teaching is accurate and brief.This study united mental image and teaching based on aesthetics together creatively. It used maps for the material of memory trait creatively .It synthetically applied non-equivalent control group pretest posttest design and time-series design. It is an important part of the theory and experiment research of memory. The results from it will help improve geography teaching and improve the effect of maps teaching...
