| The thesis is concerned with the culture teaching in the foreign language classroom. The main premise is the interwoven relationship between language and culture. The thesis reviews the history of the culture teaching in foreign language teaching at home and abroad. Consideration is then mainly focused on what and how to teach culture. It is demonstrated that the target culture and native culture are both crucial to foster students'cross-cultural communicative competence and the cultural content should cater to that goal. Lastly, in light of the constructivist theory, the author presents a SPIC model: i.e. student-initiated, problem-elicited, integrative and comparative model for teaching culture and warns against some problems in cultural teaching.The thesis makes its base on the culture teaching in foreign language teaching. It consists of five chapters.Chapter one introduces the whole thesis which gives a brief account of the background and the value and significance of the present research. At the end, it provides research method.Chapter two is divided into two parts. The first part reviews the history of the culture teaching in foreign language abroad. The second part reviews the history of the culture teaching at home.Chapter three is the core part of this thesis in which what to teach about culture is conducted with abundant samples. It is also composed of two parts. The first part makes a classification of problems in China's EFL cultural instruction. The second part expounds and analyzes the cultural content in China's EFL ClassroomChapter four is also the core part of this thesis, that's, how to teach about culture: the SPIC model.Chapter five comes to the conclusion that summarizes the present research and gives constructive advice for the future research in this field. |
