With the development of linguistic theory and the higher requirement of cross-culture communication, English is playing a more and more important role today. The new curriculum focuses more on the cultivation of students'culture awareness, cultural sensitivity and cross-culture communication competence on English teaching.It is well known that reading is of decisive importance in English learning. English syllabus for senior high school regards reading ability as the first priority in four basic skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing. The purpose of this thesis is to improve the students'reading comprehension ability by inputting cross-culture knowledge.The thesis consists of five parts. Chapter 1 provides an introduction of the background of the problem and significance of the present study. In Chapter 2, language, culture and intercultural communication are discussed in detail, relationship between language and culture ,intercultural communicative competence are also concerned.; Also, we focuses on reading purpose, process and four levels of reading comprehension. Content of intercultural knowledge in teaching English reading comprehension and potential problems are mainly discussed in Chapter 3. Contents of culture teaching are also involved. Chapter 4 explores some methods of improving students' reading comprehension, for example, predicting, skimming and scanning and summary. In the last chapter we draw a conclusion that it is useful to input more intercultural knowledge in teaching reading comprehension according to the new syllabus in senior high school.
