The Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing in Sep. 1995. Consequently, a series of issues on women become the focus of the social scientific research in China. The first international conference on women and sports was held in Brighton, England in May 1999. With a wide negotiation and discussion, a document called"Brighton Declaration on Women and Sports"was signed. The declaration clearly points out that physical culture is an inseparable part in every country and women will surely take part in this cultural activity. This conference has given impetus to the study on women sports which has come into a new phase.The history of women's participation in sports reflexes, one way or another, the process of women's emancipation throughout the world over a century. Women's efforts and struggle in sports is essential to human being's undertaking to achieve"equality, development and peace". It is due to women's active participation in sports that the world competitive sport, represented by the Olympic Games, makes such a glorious achievement. Because of the fundamental attitude transformation toward women, athletics sports becomes a part of the main culture today, which has further enabled the Olympic dream to be widely known throughout the world. In this favorable circumstance, Chinese women competitive sports come into being and develop. Chinese women competitive sports, which represents the development of sports in China, has achieved glorious results. Due to the rapid development and broad scale, it has become an important part in Competitive sports in China.In writing this dissertation, the author has collected and analyzed a large number of documents and data, including those from the Chinese periodical network. By consulting Chinese sports almanac since the establishment of PRC, the author analyses the developing process of women competitive sports (nearly a century) from a historical perspective. By employing mathematical statistics, the author makes a quantitative analysis on the current development of women athletics sports, explores and summarizes the factors which have caused it to come into being and develop and, the sociological factors which have formed the status quo. And also, the author makes a summary and analysis on how women competitive sports has influenced our society and finally, draws a systematic conclusion on the problems of women competitive sports.By collecting and analyzing the documents and historical data from the periodical network, the author of this dissertation historically describes four phases in the development of women competitive sports, namely, rudimentary phase, developing phase, rising phase and soaring phase. This paper also makes a quantitative analysis on such elements as the event setup, participation number of women competitive sports, the number of world champions won by women athletes, the annual number of events breaking world records and the number of women participating in the administration of competitive sports, and makes use of many graphs to vividly illustrate them. This paper systematically analyses and discusses the sociological factors which have influenced the emergence and development of women competitive sports from eight aspects, namely, the enhancement of women's consciousness as a subject, women's emancipation movement, Chinese traditional culture, the value of competitive sports, mass media, the advantage of and support from the national system, the laws and regulations, the dissimilation of competitive sports. Furthermore, the paper analyses the influence of women athletics sports on the other social factors in a dialectical way: it has accelerated the development of the sports undertaking, promoted the process of women's socialization, affected people's living ways and advanced our cultural diversity. At last, the paper makes a conclusion from the following aspects: the influence on women's outlook on life and value, the diverse development of women competitive sports, the harmonious development of various sports activities in an all-round way, the laws that the development of sports undertaking can abide by, the bar brought by dissimilation of competitive sports ,the accomplishment of the equality of men and women and the constructing of a harmonious society.
