The ultimate goal of foreign language teaching is to enable students to use theforeign language in work or life when necessary. Research shows that task-basedlanguage teaching (TBLT) proves to be an efficient way to reach the goal. However,all the tasks in the language classroom don't help realize the target. AuthenticTask-based Language Teaching, which is attempting to combine TBLT withauthenticity principle for the real situation of language teaching and learning, is thecreative practice of the theory in the research of foreign language teaching, and canbe regarded as one particular development and the utilization of "task-basedlanguage teaching" currently discussed and practised in parts of China.The purpose of this paper is to introduce the principles that underlie authentic task-based language teaching and to give examples of classroom activities within theapproach. There are three main sections. The first section deals with languagepedagogy and the definition of a task. The second section contains the field ofauthenticity and the authentic TBLT with two categories—authentic pedagogictasks and authentic performance tasks. The application of authentic task-basedlanguage teaching in high school English is described and explored in more detailsin the third section, which provides a range of examples from different parts of it.The study of authentic tasks is of great significance to language teachers.
