English reading is both the main body in English exams and also one of the main abilities to use English. Although our English teaching has been focusing on cultivating students' reading ability, the English reading classroom is the teacher-centered model, and the teaching process focuses on basic language points, like vocabulary, grammar, etc. It is not effective enough to develop student's consciousness, initiative and creativity. It is an attractive topic to cultivate students' autonomous learning ability in the English reading process because it can help to develop and cultivate students' autonomous readmg ability.First, the essay states the concept of English autonomous reading, the theory of constructivism, concept and feature of autonomous learning. English reading is closely related to the autonomous learning. So it is clear that it is possible to cultivate student's autonomous learning through reading teaching in high school.In the third and fourth parts of the essay, the author investigates high school students' autonomous learning and the present teaching situation and then finds that they are not optimistic. The author points out that cultivating the ability of autonomous learning with a renovated method for teaching is a good way to improve student's autonomous reading ability, which is a major ability of autonomous learning, and the possibilities and conditions to carry out the teaching for reading in high schools in China.In the fifth part the author presents her principles for carrying out the reading teaching and its teaching models followed by a teaching example .This part contains the author's special opinion that classroom reading teaching should be closely related to the outside classroom reading in order to cultivate the ability of autonomous reading. The author holds that reading outside classroom should be part of the classroom reading teaching by setting up the topic readmg of each unit.In the sixth part , the experiment of this research is described and its result proves that autonomous reading ability helps improve students' English language competence and lay a solid foundation for future study and work.
