Nowadays, students should be cultivated into lifelong learners to adjustthemselves to the times of knowledge economy. In the past three decades, learningautonomy is increasingly attracting the attention of contemporary educators, whohave realized that only by enabling learners to gain learning autonomy can they reachthe main goal of education: to be life-long learners. In this case, this paper wants tostudy and answer the following questions: Firstly,whether the Autonomous ReadingTheory can be applied to the English reading in junior high school; Secondly, whetherthe autonomous reading can arouse the motivation and interests of students; Thirdly,whether the autonomous reading can improve the reading abilities of students.125students in Chongqing Yucai junior middle School are invited toparticipate in the study. The questionnaire consists of18statements and covers fouraspects. Its results show that there are still some problems in the self-reading of juniorhigh school students. Therefore,The author set up some methods and use them in theextracurricular English reading of students to solve these problems. Students chosethe reading material according to the topic, set reading goals and plans, use someEnglish reading strategies while they are reading, monitor their reading process andevaluate the reading result.It is found that the application of Autonomous Reading Theory can not onlyimprove their reading abilities but also arouse their motivation of English learning.Students learn the language and the learning methods as well, which can benefit themfor lifelong.Therefore, importance should be attached to reading to help them masterautonomous learning strategies and the psychological factors of the reading.
