In recent years, the nature of classroom communication has long been a focus of research for scholars interested in the effects of classroom interaction on learning. From this research much has been discovered about classroom speech events and participation structures, the nature of teacher and student's interaction and the effects of cultural factors on classroom communication. Central to an understanding of communicative language teaching is an understanding of the term communicative competence. Communicative competence has to do with real speaker---listeners who interpret, express, and negotiate meaning in many different settings. To summarize, the classroom is a unique communication context, one in which the meanings being communicated and the structure of that communication are shaped by the actions and perceptions of both teachers and students.Teachers are generally characterized as controlling most of what is said and done in classroom. Part of this control comes from the special status of teachers. Beyond their status, teachers'control over the patterns of classroom communication is generally maintained though the ways in which they use language. In fact, teachers'control of the patterns of communication determines, to a large context, how, when, where, and with whom language is to be used in the classroom. Of course, this will also depend on how students interpret and respond to what teachers say and do.
