Vocabulary is one of the three major components that constitute English language knowledge (the other two are phonetics and grammar), and it is the foundation of all English language skill, so vocabulary plays a crucial role in foreign language instruction. Just as linguist M.McCarthy(1990)claims that no adequate vocabulary to express one's own feeling or to understand others'opinions, one still cannot communicate with others in this language.Nowadays vocabulary learning is playing a fundamentally important and active role in language learning. Lack of English words is still an important problem most senior students are faced with instead of grammatical problems Therefore, the extremely important work for teachers to do at present is to prepare the learners to be independent word learners. That is, showing students various scientific and effective vocabulary learning strategies and developing their ability of words memorization to help them master words effectively. The present study would like to focus on vocabulary learning strategies.The thesis consists of the following five chapters:Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the importance of vocabulary learning. the current situation of vocabulary learning in senior high schools.Chapter2 is literature review, which introduces the studies on English vocabulary learning at home and abroad, and comments on them are presented.In Chapter 3, the study: necessity of research on learning strategies, description of the study, result and discussion. It introduces the methodology of doing our study. In this chapter, we mention the experiment design, two sets of questionnaire and a vocabulary size test, the way of data analysis method, the pilot of the experiment and the experiment steps.We present the results of the experiment. At last, we analyze the data and present the major findings.Chapter 4 Suggestion according to the study, the writer offers some possible suggestions concerning how to promote the use of these strategies.Chapter 5 is the conclusions and implications of our study.
