With the rapid development of basketball, the skill of a centre is becoming all-round and so flexible that basketball games tend to attract more audiences. Not only should a centre have the ability of high scoring, he should also have a good sense of strategy and the ability to well organize a match, support partners, conduct a fast break and secondary attack, and catch the back board to attack even in difficult situations. In the defense system of a team, the role of a centre is doubtless vital. In addition, a centre shoulders the burden to pull down rebounds and launch fast attacks. Therefore, a centre will bring a certain change to basketball skills, body qualities and strategy.Since Yao Ming joined NBA in 2002 as a number one pick, he has drawn a worldwide attention. Apart from his giant commerce merits, Yao Ming is playing better and better, especially his improved skills in controlling the area near backboard, so he is worth being addressed number one centre in NBA. As the"golden generation"of Chinese men's basketball team retired, Chinese team comes to a new era when Yao Ming is considered as the soul of the whole team and his role can not be replaced. Either in Olympic Games or world championship and Asian championship, Chinese team will perform well if Yao Ming can display his normal level. However, once Yao takes a break or his role is restricted, Chinese team will seem to be a different one who can not perform well.By approaches of collecting data, watching video, visiting experts, statistics and logical analysis, the thesis analyzes many indexes of Yao Ming in body condition, attack and defense with ten excellent NBA centers in Yao's five NBA basketball seasons and points out his advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the thesis suggests making reasonable strategies in terms of his body condition and featuring skills so as to fully exert Yao's role and it lists some advices to the development of Chinese men's basketball team.Research turns out: firstly, compared with other excellent NBA centers, the Quetelet index of Yao Ming has increased from 530.9 of his start in NBA to 622.1, leaping to the second from the ninth among 11 excellent centers. The fact shows that as for body confronting, Yao Ming has shifted his former weak point to strong one after several basketball seasons; secondly, Yao Ming is becoming better and versatile in his attack, especially his ability against other centers near backboard area. However, he lacks of dominance when compared with some mighty centers such as Shaquille O'Neal and influenced by his physical strength, Yao Ming has more turnovers in handling key basketball occasion in the fourth round and fails to play his role as a core player; thirdly, Yao Ming has improved his dominance over rebounds and block, but there is a distance to cross between him and other renowned defense centers such as Wallace and Canby due to his slow move and immediate response; fourthly, Van Gundy succeeds in promoting Yao Ming but the strategy of the whole team is stiff and conservative and fails to exert the abilities of the players; fifthly, Yao Ming has established his position as a number one center in the league after five seasons struggle, but he still has a long way to go when compared with other great centers in the same historical season; lastly, Yao Ming plays a decisive role in the future development of Chinese men's basketball team and especially his leading role and influence on the planning of strategy can not be replaced.By comparing Yao Ming with other excellent centers and taking his features into consideration, the thesis suggests: firstly, Yao Ming should enhance his dominance and aggression near the board area; secondly, Yao Ming's playing time should be restricted within 35 minutes and he shouldn't be required to do frequent miss matches; thirdly, Yao Ming should learn to adjust himself to some occasions and should stop playing when he is ill; lastly, Chinese team should improve the abilities of guards to break and pass balls and the forwards to send balls in the strong confronting matches.
