Diversity is one of the most significant features of American higher education. American higher education has developed and grown into a much more perfect system and has achieved magnificent accomplishments. At the same time, American higher education sets a very good example for the development of the world higher education. All of these have very close association with the diversity of American higher education.By modeling itself on European universities, based on American backgrounds of economy, politics, culture and religions, and undergoing frequently innovative reforms, diversity of American higher education has come into being. Conversely, diversity of American higher education can also improve American higher education and make great contributions to the development of American economy and the progress of American society.Beginning with the creation process and main types of diversity of American higher education, through analysis of the main feature of American culture, the paper elucidates that the openness and tolerance of American culture is one of the main creation reasons of the diversity of American higher education; and then tries to probe feasible ways of diversifying Chinese higher education, with the consideration of Chinese backgrounds.The paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter describes the creation process and main types of the diversity of American higher education----the diversity of college types, management system, financing sources, degree structure and student population. The second chapter gives an analysis of creation reasons of the diversity of American higher education from the perspectives of history, politics, culture, religion and so on. The third chapter reveals the significance of the diversity of American higher education. The fourth chapter, through analyzing the current situation of Chinese higher education, puts forward the suggestions that Chinese higher education needs to be diversified and the ways of diversifying Chinese higher education.
