For a long time, the middle school English teaching in our country has laid much emphasis on the students'study of language form other than the students'understanding of foreign cultures , which is indicated not only from the current classroom teaching pattern but also on the English teachers'minds . As a result,on one hand , the students have poor abilities of language acquisition .On the other hand , they don't have a clear idea about the knowledge beyond the language , which will have a bad effect on their capacity of using English in the days to come . The language is the platform of the culture . It is inevitable that the students will confront the concerned cultures when they are learning the language . The pervasive influence of the cultures of English-speaking countries is very significant in the teaching of English reading. Jesperson once said :"Learning foreign culture is the most important intention of language learning ."The language and the culture are interdependent and indispensable . Judged from the present situation of English teaching , it is evident that the importance of reading is not fully demonstrated in the middle school English teaching . The current English teaching doesn't agree with the objective rule of language teaching . Meanwhile , it can't satisfy the urgent requirements of teaching reform . As is known to all, the new curriculum has put the students abilities of appreciating the cultural difference and trans cultural communications into one of the teaching aims in middle school English teaching . This paper deals with the necessities as well as importance of the English teaching of foreign cultures through the analysis of current English teaching . So the teachers may have a right attitude toward the teaching of English reading and take effective measures to cultivate the students'transcultural awareness , which will lead to the improvement of students'reading abilities in the long run .
