With the diversification of education,continuous update of teaching concept and requirements of the New English Curriculum Standard(2003),English reading teaching faces great challenges.However,the traditional teaching method rarely meets the needs of education and classroom teaching.Therefore,in English reading teaching of senior high school,it is particularly important to convert the traditional teaching method and find a new method with era characteristics for teachers' and students' development.In recent years,the cooperative learning that encourage students to get the aim through cooperative learning activities in groups be widely applied in English teaching.How to effectively apply cooperative learning to English reading teaching becomes the important concern of teachers' teaching.Based on cooperative learning,and two theories: zone of proximal development theory and the group dynamics theory,the study applied cooperative learning to English reading in senior high school to explore the effects on students' English reading competence and attitudes.The following questions were concretely discussed:(1)Can cooperative learning enhance reading achievement of senior high school students?(2)Can cooperative learning reduce the dispersion of reading achievement of senior high school students?(3)Can cooperative learning change reading attitudes of senior high school students?This study took Baoji Chencang senior high school as the experimental school.100 students of two parallel classes from Senior Two,Class 5 and Class 6,were randomly chosen as the research subjects.Class 5 was assigned as the experimental class and Class 6 as the control class.The cooperative learning was applied to classroom teaching in the experimental class,while the traditional teaching method was adopted in the control class.Before the experiment,students' reading situation had been knownthrough the analysis of questionnaire.After the experiment of the whole semester,students' scores of the pre-test and post-test in the two classes were collected and analyzed by SPSS17.0(Statistical Product and Service Solutions).It aimed to interpret the effect of students' reading achievement.Then eight students were randomly selected for the interview from each group of the experimental class to interpret the reading attitudes towards reading.The results show that the application of cooperative learning to senior high school English reading teaching can improve students' reading achievement,reduce the dispersion of students' reading achievement and change students' learning attitude.
