Learning is everyone's task throughout his life. The basis of education is to make students to be independent and effective learners, and it has become most important in English teaching. Chinese Ministry of Education has published "English Course Standard" in 2001, which has made the English strategies as one of English teaching goals in middle schools.At present, "Testing Education" is main English teaching model of middle school in rural area. It emphasizes only doing so many exercises that students can't study. It has made the quality of teaching and learning declined. So it is necessary to study strategies training for middle school students in rural area.Vocabulary is the information carriers of language, which plays an important role in language study. Because of poor vocabulary, students can't foreign language, and can't experience their own idea clearly, communicate fluently with others and get information from reading materials. They often complain vocabulary is difficult to memorize and easy to forget. Teaching students how to learn and train their effective vocabulary study strategies can improve their study results, and quality of English teaching.This study adopts an after initial approach. From September 2006 to December, the study has trained English vocabulary study strategies to 64 students in Class 11, Grade I, Gansu Dingxi DongFangHong Middle School. Before vocabulary training, the students attended in vocabulary ability test and answer questions. After 3 months later, the study has investigated the same questions and tested students' vocabulary ability by using test paper. The main method is to train English vocabulary study strategies in daily English teaching leaning, which include learning concepts, vocabulary knowledge, the way that deal with new words in reading and dictionary using, the way that guess new words , vocabulary memorizing strategies and their vocabulary learning.The results of questionnaires and vocabulary tests have been analyzed by means and standard deviation which have been carried out of T test. The statistics shows both students' vocabulary study strategies and vocabulary ability have been improved to certain degree.The thesis is made up of 7 chapters. Chapter 1 concerns the back ground of language study strategies. Chapter 2 is about conditions of language study strategies research. Chapter 3 deals with theories of language study strategies. Chapter 4 designs vocabulary training. Chapter 5 is English vocabulary strategies training. Chapter 6 is collecting and analyzing of experiment statistics. Chapter 7 is conclusions of English vocabulary study strategy training.
