According to English Curriculum Criteria, the junoir middle school students are required to know more words than before, improve their vocabulary learning ability and know vocabulary learning strategies. Vocabulary is the most important one of the three major compenents that constitute Engish lanuage. However, vocabulary learning is also the most difficult task in rural area school. Therefore, it is necessary to study vocabulary learning strategies and improve the teaching of vocabulary learning strategies.This thesis describes the foreign and Chinese studies on vocabulary strategies and the facts of English vocabulary teaching and learning in junior middle school in rural area. The subjects of the study were the two classes of Grade2from one junior middle school in An Hui province. A questionaire, interviews were adopted to investegate the students’English vocabulary learning strategies, they also had an Engish vocabulary test. This research focuses on the use of vocabulary learning concept and strategies, the relations between vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary test scores, differences between good language learners and poor language learners. By using SPSS, the detailed analysis of the data reveal:1. Students from junior middle school in rural area seldom adopt English vocabulary learning strategies;2. There exists a correlation between vocabulary learning srategies and vocabulary test scores;3. The good English learners are better at adopting vocabulary learning strategies than poor ones.Based on the study facts, one class was designed as experimental group, the other one was control group. The experimental class has received English vocabulary learning strategy training, while the control class has received English learning in their usual way. After thirteen weeks, all subjects were tested. The results indicate that students from experimental class adopt the vocanulary learning stategies more often than the control one, the mean scores of vocabulary test of experimental class are higher than the other one. So English vocabulary learning srategy training can improve English vocabulary learning.Finally, the pedagogical implications of the research about English vocabulary are suggested in junior middle school in rural area, the limitations of this study are mentioned in the hope of throwing some insights for further studies.
