ObjectiveThe purpose of this research is to determine how Herba Epimedii, an herb used in Chinese traditional medicine, can benefit the physical condition of athletes in training.MethodsRats were used in this study to determine the effects of Herba Epimedii on muscular. liver and blood cell damage, when subjected to increased exercise loads. A total of 48 rats were randomly divided into three groups of 16. Rats in the S Group were required to swim daily. SM Group rats swam daily and were administered Herba Epimedii And C Group rats, as the control group, were not required to exercise or to take Herba Epimedii. Groups A and B swam daily for a total of eight days and, every other day, the swimming duration was gradually lengthened. On the final, eighth day of swimming, blood was collected from Groups A and B immediately after their swimming exercise and also from Group C. After a rest period of 24 hours, with no exercise, blood was collected again from all three groups and tested. The amounts of CK, SOD, MDA and ALT in the plasma were also determined.Results(1) CK was lowest in the SM Group.(2) After the 24 hour rest period, the ratio of SOD to MDA was the highest in the SM Group.(3) After the 24 hour rest period, the amount of ALT in the S Group and the C Group were higher than normal.(4) The highest number of RBC was produced during the 24 hour rest period by SM Group rats, and the lowest number of WBC was found in the SM Group, both immediately after the final exercise and after the 24 hour rest period.ConclusionHerba Epimedii was able to reduce muscular and liver damage and to maintain blood condition, as well as, to help post-exercise recovery from accumulated damages caused by physical exercise.
