Cooperative learning came from U.S.A. at the beginning of the 20th century, obtaining substantive development from mid-1970s to mid-1980s.What is called cooperation is student's cooperation through dividing the work that reaches the goal. It is not only favorable to the improvement of the learning result, but also favorable to the cultivation in thinking ability, self-esteem, self-confidence, social ability, which have reflected the human-oriented thought.The changing of learning way was proposed by " the outline of basic education course reforms (try) ".The student's innovation of learning way is to advance the focal point of quality-oriented education on the classroom aspect of school in an all-round way at present. It especially puts emphasis on acting on one's own, cooperating and probing into. Then the new teaching mode of cooperative learning is applied extensively and effectively in English teaching in recent years. However, the writer finds that cooperative learning doesn't reach the ideal result in teaching practice of senior high school, even contrary to the first aim. For this reason, this text reviews on these phenomena, putting forward some tactics attempted to solve it.In the English classroom, the teacher is apt to lay particular stress on the language knowledge of English, ignoring the training for student's language ability. So it is extremely apt to make students become the passive recipients and restrain students from using English. These have not met the need of the English teaching of senior high school under the new course standard very much. While cooperative learning, which gives great importance to communication and interaction of teacher-to-student and student-to-student, has great effect on changing the atmosphere of the classroom and cultivating good non-cognitive psychological qualities of students. Thus the classroom instruction needs the teaching mode, cooperative learning, which faces all the students and helps them to practice language in an all-round way.This thesis proceeds with the reality of English classroom and basic theories of cooperative learning, describing the intension, theoretical foundation and theory meaning. It also combines the actual conditions of the English classroom of senior high school. It collects the classroom examples about cooperative learning through interviews and classroom observation. It discusses especially how the present situation of the senior high school in applying the cooperative learning. The writer gives some advice on how to solve the problems, hoping to have some influence on further study on cooperative learning.
