Phonetic teaching holds the balance in English teaching and a good phonetic basis(spelling and reading ability) can greatly speed the development of learners' English ability. Most junior one fresh can neither write nor read English letters, even they don't know English sounds at all. Though they learned English in primary schools, most of them can only read English words by imitation. This terribly blocks their learning ability. Meanwhile the starting point of the textbook is simple daily expressions and topics. Phonemes, English sounds, word stress, sentence stress and intonation are not involved. Considered our practical situations, the experimental research on English letter and pronunciation teaching for junior one fresh is done.Quasi-experimental research is used, which belongs to research methods. Non-equivalent control group design is chosen in this experiment. The experiment lasts four months. Stimulus variable is English-letter-and-pronunciation teaching method, response variable is students' English-learning ability. Instrument is Test Paper A and Test Paper B, Test Paper A is used to find out students' level before the experiment, while Test Paper B is used to find out students' learning result after the experiment.T-test is done when the experiment is over. The result shows that the score for listening, spelling, reading comprehension, cloze-test and the whole test of the experimental group are higher than those of the control group. Therefore, the result is that English letter and pronunciation teaching can be of much help to junior one fresh, for it can help them understand words better and remember the words more correctly. And it can also help students to improve their spelling and reading ability, which is the basis for self-study. This experiment is the embodiment of the notion of the Standards of English Curriculum, which requires the teachers to help students to use learning strategies effectively in their self- studies. The experiment also gives constructive suggestions on teaching methods that teachers can utilize in their teaching.
