The new idea for linguistic teaching born in a new round of curriculum reform is as such: English teaching is the way the students learn to build knowledge, develop skills, activate their mind, enlarge their view and form the correct values with the guidance of their teachers. The new idea for linguistic teaching has made a breakthrough in the traditional English teaching in our country, which considers the learning of linguistic and pragmatic knowledge as the only goal for English teaching. The new idea has attached great importance to the training of the students' ability in terms of information attainment, critical thinking, cooperation consciousness, independence, etc. for better living and development in modern society in the target system of English teaching. The Thematic English Teaching in Senior Middle Schools emerges as the times require.The Thematic English Teaching is a teaching mode which integrates all the linguistic knowledge with certain themes. Through the analysis of the current view on talents, the new requirements for students under the new curriculum as well as the disadvantages of the traditional English teaching methods, the paper puts it clear that the Thematic Teaching is an effective way to improve the English teaching in our senior middle schools. The paper also gives out an introduction to the history and current conditions of the Thematic Teaching both at home and abroad. In the following part, the paper explores the basic connotation and characteristics, theoretic basis and principles of the Thematic English Teaching. Besides the four procedures in practice, it also gives out a live example of the Thematic Instniction in a high school English class and specially focuses on making full use of teaching resources as well as building the data-bank of themes. In the end, it presents the positive feedback of the Thematic English Teaching. It comes to the conclusion : the Thematic English Teaching has more advantages than traditional English teachings to achieve the English teaching aims.The author believes this paper will enrich the research of the Thematic English Teaching in senior middle schools in our country both in theoretical and practical aspects. The author also hopes it can be of some help to the English teaching practice.
