Literacy is the basis of reading and writing. Knowing the literacy amount of students will help teachers improve their Chinese teaching, and the research on literacy amount will have both practical significance and theoretical significance. Measuring and appraising literacy amount will help teachers and students understand the literacy status serving as both the method for school and educational authorities to appraise the teaching performance of Chinese teachers and reference for the editors and writers of textbooks. The research on literacy amount provide plenty fact and proof for theoretical researcher, which will be helpful to enlarge the research fruits of Chinese character and develop and perfect the relative research.By using the Literacy Amount of Primary School Students Measurement Item Pool and Assessment Scale drafted by Wang Xiaoling and Tao Baoping, this research measured the 334 students' literacy amount from 3 rural primary schools in Lujiang County and collected relative literacy amount data by means of questionnaire survey and interviews. From this investigation we found that the status of literacy amount of the primary school students is as follows:The junior students' literacy amount is less than the required one in the course standard, however , the senior students' literacy amount is slightly higher than the required one in the course standard. There is fairly big gap between the literacy amount of primary school students and required one in the textbook, and there are gender and region difference. There are some relationships between children's Chinese scores and their literacy amount.Following suggestion and measure are achieved according to the above phenomenon and analysis of literacy amount condition: try to change literacy amount requirements, construct ideal literacy amount mode for rural primary school students, strengthen the teaching of literacy in all the classes and promote teaching level of literacy amount for rural primary school teachers, have an attempt of scientific research on literacy amount and speed up the scientific research on literacy amount and literacy teaching.
