History and Society in junior high school is a comprehensive course on history, geography and society. Being an important part in a text book, pictures have an outstanding effect on the study of the school children. Because of long term ignorance on history teaching by the school and society as well as the limited level of the junior high history teachers, there is still little study on picture using in history teaching especially in junior high history textbook.In this article systematical analyses are made on the pictures in the History and Society textbook and their using in the teaching practice from the points of view of psychology, aesthetics and pedagogy. In view of existing problems with the chosen pictures in the History and Society textbooks, this paper explores how to use the pictures effectively in teaching and tries to put forward the strategies to solve this problem and use the pictures critically. Different teaching strategies are proposed according to the differences in areas and individual students to improve the effectiveness of textbook picture using and at the same time, build up high quality historical picture resources to accord with the demands of the modern times and cultivate qualified citizens. Moreover, during the article we systematically analyzing the characteristics of picture using, we realize that the history teachers are not only familiar with and research history textbooks, but also understand history and the space of the history development. If we want to do this, we should study the history, geography and other social subjects harder and harder, and give the students more influences about daily life and activities.The article consists of four chapters: First it analyses the integrative trend of historical pictures and geographical pictures. Second it explores how to achieve multi-functions of the textbook pictures in teaching practice. Thirdly it proposes specific strategies in using the pictures effectively and scientifically. Fourthly it explores how to exploit the resources of the textbook pictures.
