This study is based on the Gender Schema Theory of Sandra Lipsitz Bern. The purpose of this study was to examine (1) the relationships between gender role identity and the traditional gender role attitudes in university students, (2)whether there were significant differences between male and female participants' gender attitude, and (3)the differences of gender role attitude between the participants from different group of educational level and subject. In this study, a questionnaire was amended to measure the traditional gender attitudes. The amendment is based on the Gender Role Attitudinal Inventory designed by scholars from Taiwan. According to the analysis results of the item differential validity, the relationship between items and the total score, and the result of factor analysis, 45 items were selected, which compounds 4 primary components. The questionnaire that finally applied to 302 participants was constructed by the CSRI (Chinese Sex Role Inventory) and the GRAI (Gender Role Attitudinal Inventory). The results of this research are as fallow:1. Four types of gender role were detected in university students. The distribution of these four types has statistically significant difference. The difference can not be detected among participants with different educational level.2. A statistically significant difference exists between male and female participants. For all participants, positive relationships between higher Negative Masculinity on the CSRI and traditional attitudes toward gender roles were found. Masculinity would be correlated with negative attitudes toward traditional gender roles. Highly masculine men would be more likely to have traditional attitudes toward gender roles.
