In the 21st century, the world is undergoing a comprehensive, profound change. The changes which are most closely related to vocational education are the economic globalization and the new technological revolution. These changes put forward daunting challenges to the existing vocational education system of various countries in the world. To meet these challenges, countries around the world reform their own system of vocational education, especially the system of foreign language courses (mainly referring to English). The bold practices and innovations are carried on the studies of foreign language curriculum, from education policy and guidance frame to teaching models and teaching methods, which have provided precious experience for the transformation of English teaching in Chinese secondary vocational education. At present, Guangxi has gained a great achievements in vocational education, but there is still a long way to go to obtain the task of transforming and developing the English teaching. How to improve students'English teaching level has increasingly become an important task required to be studied and solved by the English teachers in secondary vocational schools.Based on the review of English teaching in Guangxi secondary vocational schools, the present thesis has made a survey of English teaching in some schools by questionnaire and literature analysis, and then mainly analyzed in terms of learning motivation, teaching methods and means, teaching contents, teacher training and learning evaluation. The results of survey analysis show that most of students in secondary vocational schools lack of clear learning motivation; teachers teaching methods and means are so outdated as to be unable to highlight the occupational characteristics of secondary vocational schools; teaching contents lack pertinence and practicability; the overall quality of teachers urgently need to be enhanced; evaluation means of learning is simplistic.In the light of the survey and analysis of English teaching in Guangxi secondary vocational schools, and according to the concepts of employment-oriented vocational education, the theories of new curriculum reform and needs analysis, and combining with the author's many-year teaching practice, this thesis puts forward the following suggestions and strategies for improving the quality of English teaching in secondary vocational schools: (1) Highlight the characteristics and practicability of English teaching in secondary vocational schools .(2) the teaching concept and improve teaching methods. (4) Optimize the teaching contents and strengthen practicability of English teaching. (5) Strengthen the implementation of teacher training, and finally, to improve the learning evaluation system.The thesis consists of six chapters, centering the attention on the main theme of"the main problems and inadequacies in the current English teaching and how to improve English teaching in Guangxi secondary vocational schools". Due to the limitations of time, survey scope and the level of research, the results of survey may not entirely reflect the realistic situation of English teaching in secondary vocational schools in Guangxi. And there are still many deep-rooted issues that have not been in better discussed and further explored. However, the present study still can provide some help for English teaching in secondary vocational schools of Guangxi.
