In the past twenty years, in America Content-Based Instruction (CBI) has been found to be an effective approach to teaching English as a foreign or second language, because with CBI, students can develop their language skills as well as gain access to new concepts through meaningful content. In China, language teachers have been making effort to propose various language teaching methods. However, there is not much study and research about CBI except bilingual education, which has been carried out in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and some other mainly big cities. It proves to enhance students'both content and English learning. But for the lack of enough qualified CBI teachers who can construct students to study their school curricular in English, bilingual education develops slowly, while only a few English teachers experiment with CBI in their daily teaching.This thesis is intended to investigate the effect of CBI on the students in senior high school. Whether CBI can arouse students'interest and enhance their English learning is the purpose of the study. This thesis begins with the introduction, including the background, the significance and the purpose of the study, and then reviews general information about the features of CBI, including its definition, rationales, modes, characteristics and so on. Later in Chapter Three, a CBI experiment which was carried out in Weixian No.1 Senior High School of Hebei province is presented. Data collection and analysis are included in Chapter four. The last chapter concludes the limitations and suggestion for further study.The writer hopes that the thesis can contribute to the study of Chinese foreign language teaching and encourage more language teachers to explore CBI, and English can be taught according to students'needs and interest. Thus Chinese English teaching will reach a new milestone.
