College students' collective events may lead to not only substantial negative impact on campus teaching order and moral atmosphere, but also loss of functioning of students' organizations. Even worse, it may evolve into serious social problems, greatly endangering campus and social stability. So proper handling and effective prevention of such collective events are of great importance to constructing harmonious socialist society, maintaining social and campus stability, creating nice cultivating environment, and promoting college students' all-around makings. In China, collective event has long been an important concept in public crisis management. Currently, contingency plans are widely established in higher education institutions, which can effectively bring on-going college students' collective events under control. Nevertheless, teaching and living order in higher education institutions are spoiled, resulting in substantial loss. Avoidance of such events is possible if we can find out the law of their progress and solve them before their spreading. Based on a survey of 280 students in six universities in Beijing and analysis on recent cases, this thesis, with reference to "Collective Behavior" Theory and related studies at home, makes a tentative probe into the nature, characteristics, causes, occurrence conditions, and evolution progress. It is a general belief that administering is a continuing process of conciliating conflicting interests and taking combined action, thus the prevention of college students' collective events is not solely the unilateral responsibility of the university, but an interaction of participation and cooperation involving students, parents, and the society. This thesis proposes innovatively that introducing governance theory of public management into prevention of college students' collective events, with prospects of constructing a harmonious society, is fundamental in establishing an alert mechanism for college students' collective events.
