Samuel Chapman Armstrong (1839-1893) was the founder and the first principal of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. His educational philosophy and practice in Hampton had established a brand-new style of education which is often called the Hampton Model of Industrial Education. This form of education had been in the spotlight since Armstrong's prized pupil, Booker T. Washington founded Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in 1881. Hampton Model of Industrial Education had played a significant role in educating ex-slaves and even had a great influence on universal education in the South and the education for Native Americans. This dissertation aims to explore the idea and practice of Hampton Model of Industrial Education and its influence in the context of the southern society after Reconstruction.
