With the importance of English in the world today and the demand to teach learners a working command of English to satisfy various communicative needs in their life, EFL teachers in China have felt an urge to learn the newest and best methods of teaching in senior high schools. At the same time some education experts brought forward that communicative approaches should be used in the English classroom at senior high schools in order to cultivate students'communicative ability. Especially in the recent two years, with the establishment of new course standard, revising and trial of the high school textbook, communicative approaches have really been dominating the English classroom.However, the author finds it is not very ideal to use communicative approaches at non-governmental senior high school.In this thesis the author firstly analyzes the theories of communicative approaches, points out the roles of teachers and students in the student-centered communicative activity, and emphasizes"using languages to learn"and"learning to use languages". The author also brings forth the functional communication and social interaction activities. The purpose will assist learners to develop greater competence in the use of English for communication."After putting the theory into practice, the author analyzes tests from the experiment and verifies that communicative approaches, in fact, are not suitable for the students at non-governmental senior high schools through own teaching examples. The students cannot carry out a series of in-class activities at all under communicative principles. Only under the lead of the teacher can they finish each activity. Undoubtedly, it reminds teachers of a change in teaching approaches: revising the application of communicative approaches.At last, the author holds the opinion that it would be a suitable and reasonable way to integrate communicative approaches and traditional approaches systematically.
