Vocabulary is one of the essential factors in learning a language,an organic part of one's language ability and the basis of developing one's language skills.Wilkins once pointed out, "without grammar, few can be conveyed;without vocabulary,nothing can be conveyed." In learning a foreign language,one can't read and understand the language materials quickly without adequate vocabulary.For a language learner,to master the vocabulary of a foreign language is an important aspect in improving one's language level.For a long period of time, vocabulary teaching is a weak link in middle schools in China.Though lots of efforts and energy are put into it,we still find the results quite disappointing. " the survey showed that vocabulary obstacles and syntax ones are the most severe obstacles for the middle school students in China." "more than half of the students have serious vocabulary problems in reading English passages."(Li yueqiu,Foreign Language Teaching in Schools, 2003. 8-10). "many students don't master enough vocabulary so that they have difficulty in making sentences and whole passages."(Liu qingsi,China Exam,2002.11-12)Under the new curriculum standards,the students are required to master a much larger vocabulary and to use the vocabulary more flexibly,which brings in an unprecedented challenge for vocabulary teaching in middle schools.This research is to make a survey on the present vocabulary teaching and learning,combine the requirements and characteristics of middle school vocabulary and put forward some practical strategies in teaching and consolidating vocabulary.It's required that teachers should update their theories and ideas ,strengthen the practice and applications on vocabulary teaching. For students, they're required to acquire some general methods of memorizing vocabulary and practise using vocabulary actively to enlarge their vocabulary,consolidate what they have learned and improve their ability of usingvocabulary freely.
