As a global language, English is a major vehicle of the development of science, technique, economy and cross-culture communication all around the world. We can't deny the fact that English is becoming more and more important not only at institutions of education but also in our daily life. There has been a consensus in the ESL/EFL teaching realm that vocabulary plays a core role in language learning process. However, in English teaching, especially at high schools in China, vocabulary learning has long been considered to be a prolonged battle that is so hard to win. Low efficiency has become a bottleneck in vocabulary teaching and learning process.Emphasis on vocabulary is reasonable and feasible. However, it has long been ignored by many teachers who think it is unnecessary to devote any significant part of their limited time in class to vocabulary teaching and students themselves should be responsible for building up their vocabulary. Understanding the needs of the students and exploring positive and effective vocabulary teaching/learning strategies is an essential way to lessen the burden of the students and to promote life-long and over-all education.This paper consists of a introduction and five chapters:The introduction points out the importance and necessity of high school vocabulary teaching and learning strategy research.Chapter One presents a literature review. In this chapter, studies on different aspects of language learning and vocabulary learning and teaching strategies are discussed, serving as the theoretical basis of the whole paper.Chapter Two analyses the vocabulary teaching and learning circumstances in high schools in China. Various aspects are explored. These include the development course of vocabulary teaching in China, the change of vocabulary claim in the New Curriculum and the problem existing in high schools.Chapter Three focuses on the research conducted to investigate the current circumstances of vocabulary teaching and learning in high schools. This paper take Yueqiing No.2 Middle School for example, aimed at finding the differences of the vocabulary beliefs and strategies between the teachers and the students. By contrast, we try to discover the positive and negative sides of vocabulary teaching and learning in our school, and provide some technical data for the further study.
