Task- based language teaching (TBLT) for middle school English teaching is suggested in the Senior Curriculum Standards to cultivate students' competence in the comprehensive use of the language. The thesis attempts to implement task-based language teaching in reading class in order to arouse students' interest and improve their reading ability. The thesis begins with the elaboration of the task-based language teaching and the survey of reading theory. Then an experimental study is conducted to investigate the effect of a task-based reading teaching on middle school students. The experimental study lasted four months and involved 110 students. Both the quantitative and qualitative results of the study indicate that task-based reading teaching can not only arouse the students' reading interest and activate their internal motivation to learn English but also improve their reading ability and the ability to use English.
