Reading comprehension is very important in English learning, so the English Syllabus considerspromoting the students’reading comprehension as one of the most important goals in Englishteaching.Reading is a main way for people to acquire information, study or entertainment. What’s more,it accounts for a relatively greater part in all kinds of language proficiency test. The author finds out thatreading is still the weak point of students in English studying on the basis of her six years teachingexperience.In traditional English reading classes, teachers often explain the language points and students takenotes all the time.So reading classes are often boring. The theory of Task-based Language Teachingemphasizes“learning by doing”,in which students are engaged in naturalistic leaning through participatingin communicative activities and accomplishing language learning tasks with their teachers. It can arousestudents’internal demand and develop students’interest in learning English.The purpose of this paper is to discuss from the theoretical level about if the task-based teachingmethod can be used in reading classes effectively. The paper studies the theoretical foundation of thetask-based language and the theory of reading. It also presents the model and steps of the task-basedreading teaching. Afterward, it gives an example of the task-based reading class and explains the purposeof the design. On the basis of experiment, this paper shows that this kind of teaching method can evoke thestudents’enthusiasm and improve their reading abilities. Furthermore, the students’comprehensivecompetence of using language and English level can be improved.In this thesis, the author did an experiment in Chang He Senior Middle School, Tong Wei Town, GanSu Province.100students in Grade Two participated in the experiment. There are50students respectivelyin the experimental class and the controlled class. The task-based language teaching was adopted in theexperimental class, while the traditional reading teaching method was used in the controlled class. Theexperiment lasted about a term.Testing results indicate:compared with the traditional reading teachingmethod,the task-based reading teaching is more effective in arousing learners’interest in reading andimproving students’reading competence.However,due to the limited time and subject of the experiment, and also the complication of thetask-based language teaching, the author offers some thoughts after the application of the task-based reading teaching method to the peers.So it is beneficial for them to improve English teaching.
